Distinct aspects/Characteristics/Features of Islam

[1] Divine religion with the same message:

There are explicit texts in the Quran as well as the Hadiths of the Prophet which indicate that all the divine religions are called to the same basic principle, to worship Allah alone in exclusion of all others and follow the path of Allah’s messengers to get success in this life and hereafter. Allah sent prophets to mankind, to guide them and they all had the same message from the first Prophet Adam (A.S) to the last Prophet Muhammad PBUH.

The Messenger of Allah (p.b.u.h) said, “Indeed, I am to the other prophets as is a man who built a house beautifully and perfectly, except one brick which was not placed in its corner. People circle and admire it, but say, “If only a brick was put in this place! ‟ I am that brick and the last of all prophets.” [Sahih-Bukhari] So, Islam is not a new only religion. It is a continuation of Divine revelations.

[2] General and Universal Religion

Islam is a general and universal religion. It was not sent solely to a specific group or race, nor recognize any caste, area, or border; it is the same for everyone and everywhere. In addition to it, Allah (SWT) is not only the creator of Muslims but the creator of all, and Prophet Muhammad PBUH is the prophet to all. As for the earlier messengers, they were sent to specific nations.

[All] praise is [due] to Allah, Lord of the worlds. [Surah-Al-Fatiha]

And We have not sent you (O Prophet), but to the entire mankind, as a bearer of good news and warner. but most people do not know. [Surah Saba]

[3] Authentic and Everlasting Religion

All religions have suffered corruption in their meanings and holy scripts, but Islam has still its original book from 1400 years in its original form. It is the last religion that Allah chose for humanity. Allah will not accept anything else from His slaves. Allah has promised to preserve and guard it against all kinds of distortions until the Day of Judgment.

Indeed, it is We who sent down the Qur’an and indeed, We will be its guardian. (Surah Al-Hijr)

[4] Comprehensive and Complete Religion:

Islam has completed and perfected the legislation which came before it. As the earlier religions were meant only for a specific nation and time, they are not suited for the present world and times. Islam, a universal and eternal religion perfected and completed those aspects and is suitable for all times and peoples. Allah says in Quran:

ٱلۡيَوۡمَ أَكۡمَلۡتُ لَكُمۡ دِينَكُمۡ وَأَتۡمَمۡتُ عَلَيۡكُمۡ نِعۡمَتِي وَرَضِيتُ لَكُمُ ٱلۡإِسۡلَٰمَ دِينٗاۚ

This day I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favor upon you, and approved Islam as your deen for you. [Surah-Al-Maida]

[5] Perfect Religion

The legislations and teachings of Islam are from Allah; thus, they are unchangeable and perfect. They are not human legislations that contain mistakes, and shortcomings and are continuously influenced by exterior factors. The one who legislated it is the Creator of all things, the One who knows what best suits their conditions and what rectifies their affairs. No matter what status he may achieve, no one has the right to oppose, change, add, or omit this legislation. Allah says:

[6] Moderate and practical religion

Islam always focuses on moderation and keeping a balance between this world and Akhirah. It does not talk about exaggeration of any kind. Islam always tells us to remain moderate even in worship that we must perform obligatory prayers and worship, but we have a choice to perform voluntary prayers and worship. The best way to understand this can be

When three people came to the Prophet PBUH and asked about his daily routine and worship. Upon hearing it, they thought their worship was not enough for them. So, one person said, “I will never sleep at night but worship Allah all night.” Others said, “I will not get married so that he can spend his life solely worshipping Allah.” The third one said, “I will never eat meat.” (To deprive himself of the pleasure that it would please Allah). When Prophet PBUH heard them, he denied their deeds and said, “But I fast, break my fast, eat, sleep, wake up at night to worship and marry women”- the one who refuses my sunnah (recommended deeds) is not one of my followers.

[7] A Religion of Equality

There is not any discrimination in Islam. Every item of its legislation applies to everyone; there is no difference between the rich and poor, noble, and commoner, ruler, and subject, or white and black. Everyone is equal in the implementation of the Shari’ah law.

During the time of the Prophet (PBUH), a woman from a noble clan (Makhdoom) and tribe (Quresh) committed theft. People were saying who will hold her accountable for this act on which The Prophet stood and addressed them, saying:

“O People, the thing which destroyed those before you were that if one of their nobles committed a theft, they did not punish him, but if one of their common folk stoles, they established Allah’s fixed punishment upon him. By Allah, if Fatimah, the daughter of Muhammad, committed a theft, I would cut her hand off.” [Sahih Muslim]

[8] Unchangeable Religion

The textual sources of the religion of Islam are still present today in their original forms, free from any omission, addition, or substitution. The main sources of the religion of Islam are the Qur’an and the Sunnah of the Messenger (p.b.u.h). The Quran at present is still in its original form, as it was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), with the same letters, verses, and chapters.

[9] Rewards and Punishment in Islam

The rulings of Islam are not just abstract pieces of advice or instructions that have no rewards or punishments. Although, it offers good rewards for the obedient ones and punishment for the transgressors and violators of the law. Muslims avoid the forbidden deeds not only because of shame from Allah but also out of fear of Allah’s punishment on the day of judgment.
