Islam: Its Meanings and Concepts

Introduction

What is Islam?

Literal Definition: Islam is often defined as “the religious faith of Muslims including belief in Allah as the sole deity and Muhammad as his prophet.”

Believer’s Perspective: However, this definition does not fully capture Islam from a Muslim’s perspective. For believers, Islam is not merely a religion—it is the way of life (Deen) that Allah Almighty has revealed for humanity so they may attain peace and success in this world and the Hereafter.

The Essence of Islam: Submission and Peace

Why Submission Leads to Peace

If we are in revolt and do not submit ourselves to the will of Almighty Allah (SWT), we can never truly be at peace. While we may achieve various worldly accomplishments—such as:

  • Making a lot of money
  • Fulfilling desires
  • Attaining worldly success

…these achievements alone will not bring genuine happiness and inner peace. To attain true peace, we need more than worldly success; we must submit ourselves to the will of Allah, which grants us authentic tranquility.

The Linguistic Root: “Salema”

The word Islam is derived from the Arabic root word “Salema” (سَلِمَ), which carries two core meanings:

MeaningSignificance
SubmissionSurrendering one’s will to Allah
PeaceAttaining tranquility through submission

Thus, Islam can be understood as:

The path to peace through submission to Allah

Islam as a Comprehensive Way of Life

Islam is not a collection of rituals confined to places of worship. Rather, it is a complete system that encompasses:

  • Aqeedah (Creed) – Belief in the oneness of Allah
  • Ibadah (Worship) – Spiritual practices connecting believers to their Creator
  • Akhlaq (Character) – Moral and ethical conduct
  • Muamalat (Transactions) – Social, economic, and political interactions
  • Shariah (Law) – Divine guidance for justice and governance

The Opposite: Kufr

In contrast to Islam, the term Kufr (كفر) refers to:

  • Rejecting the supremacy and oneness of Allah (SWT)
  • Covering or denying the truth
  • Disbelief and ingratitude toward the Creator

Where Islam calls for submission leading to peace, Kufr represents rejection leading to spiritual disconnection.

Key Concepts in Islam

1. Deen (دين)

Unlike the English word “religion,” which often implies a private set of beliefs, Deen encompasses a complete system of life—covering spiritual, personal, social, political, and economic dimensions.

2. Tawheed (توحيد)

The foundational concept of Islam: the absolute oneness of Allah. All acts of worship and submission are directed to Him alone.

3. Submission (الاستسلام)

The act of willingly surrendering one’s will to Allah’s commands, recognizing His wisdom and authority.

4. Peace (السلام)

One of Allah’s names is As-Salam (The Source of Peace). True peace—both internal and societal—is achieved when humanity aligns with divine guidance.

The Islamic Worldview: Success Beyond Worldly Achievement

AspectWithout SubmissionWith Submission

Summary: Islam as the Root

Islam is the root that leads us to submission to our Lord, and through that submission, we find true peace.

This understanding transforms Islam from a set of rituals into a holistic way of life—one that guides believers in every aspect of existence, ensuring harmony between the individual, society, and their Creator.
